Air
flow
- It is important to get a good flow of air circulating through
any indoor crop. Extractor fans are used to remove air that is warm
and stale, as well as some of the odour. This air needs to be replaced
and the best entry point is around the bottom of the plants, so
this fresh air can circulate up through the leaves and out at the
top.

C
Calcium
- [C] Calcium is essential for plant growth, cell division and enlargement.
It is a component of cell membranes and is important for developing
the root system, shoot tips and storage organs. Calcium aids in
pollen development and help plants to retain their foliage.
Cannabis
- A drug produced in various forms from the dried leaves and flowers
of the hemp plant, smoked or chewed. Also, the hemp plant, especially
when grown as a source of cannabis. Latin name: Cannabis sativa.
Smoking of the buds and leaves causes a cerebral effect often referred
to as being "stoned", or "high", and is used
recreationally, for relaxation and for certain medicinal conditions.
Cannaboids
-
CBD
- [cannabidiol] Indica's higher CBD than THC equals a much heavier,
sleepy type of high. Indica plants have a very stony high that is
relaxing and can help different medical problems.
CBN
- [cannabinol] This is produced when the thc degrades (the bud goes
off) and is undesirable.
Clone
- A clone is basically a cutting from another plant. By this technique,
one can ensure that the genetic qualities of a mother plant are
reproduced; hence the name cloning. The only disadvantage is that
clones tend to grow less vigorously than plants started from seeds.
Begin from seed and choose your best plant. The best shoots for
cutting are side shoots on the lower part of the plant, as these
will root faster than older parts of the plant.
Coconut
Fibre
- Coconut fibre is a versatile grow media that can be used in soil
and hydroponics because it is biodegradable. Coconut fibre is also
very durable, resistant to rot and is made of compressed, shredded
coconut shell fibres and comes in various forms. It is sometimes
used in soil cultivation in place of peat moss, while others use
it as mulch. Some hydroponics cultivators top off their rockwool
grow media with shredded coconut fiber for better moisture retention.
Brick or cubed coconut fiber is best suited for plant propagation
while the shredded form works better in ebb & flow and drip
systems. Coconut fibre also retains its original shape fairly well
and can be reused in hydroponics applications or used for improving
soil.
Cross
- A cross is the offspring or generation of 2 similar geno-types.
Curing
- Curing or drying is an important part of the process, to be sure
that your cannabis reaches its best. By
drying slowly, you make the buds more pleasant and tasty to smoke.
This process can take about two weeks and the buds keep their delicious,
sweet aroma and taste. During
drying, there are chemical changes that happen, which will increase
the active ingredients. The desired drying area needs to be around
room temperature (low 70F) and in darkness. Ventilation and air
circulation are also important, so as to avoid mould problems.

E
EC
- [Electric Conductivity] EC is an important measure of total solute
concentration (salinity level) of a solution. High salinity in the
solution decreases the availability of water to the roots of plants
and prevent nutrient uptake and overall growth performance. The
osmotic potential near the root, which depends on the nutrient concentration
in the solution, is used to control the plant's growth, development
and fruit quality. The EC can be completely controlled by the Gardener.
Commercial growers make daily decisions about their EC settings
depending on the condition of the crop and on light levels. A good
understanding of EC level is essential for maximum crop performance.

F
F1
- The term "F1" means the "first filial generation"
or "first generation offspring" of a cross between 2 different
genotypes (seed lines). While F1 types are generally uniform, they
do not breed true, like IBL's and regional land races.
Fan
Leaf
- A fan leaf is a large leaf that often shades lower buds from the
light they need to grow well. Fan leaves may be prudently removed
to allow light to pass through the plant.
Female
Plant
- A female flower has a small green seed pod with two fuzzy V-shaped
hairs sticking out of it. The hairs, called stigmas, are white but
they can be other colours, depending on the strain you are growing.
The flowers build up during flowering to form the thick clusters,
generally called buds. The female is usually shorter and bushier
than male plants. Between 7 to 21 days there is a change from growing
to flowering when placed on a 12/12 flowering light cycle. If you
look near the stem and leaf joints on your plants, you will see
the change.
Flowering
Period
- The flowering period relates to the second stage in the life of
a cannabis plant. In the wild, marijuana plants change from vegetative
growth to flowering when it detects a shortening in daylight hours.
Indoor grow systems can be manipulated to a perfect 12 hours on,
12 hours off to stimulate bud formation. Most varieties of cannabis
will need 12 hours of constant, uninterrupted, total darkness every
day. The dark period needs to be at a regular time each day. It
is possible to use a timer switch when using lamps. Interrupting
the dark period by looking in the grow area or letting outside light
in during the dark period will delay flowering, stress your plants
and even promote sexual deviation; so instead of females, they change
to hermaphrodites (a plant that is part male and part female).

G
Ganja
- Slang word for cannabis.
'
' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' '
H
Hermaphrodites
- A plant that is part male and part female, usually brought about
through stress or confusion due to fluctuating light periods.
High
Pressure Sodium
- High Pressure Sodium [HPS]lights
are strong in the red spectrum of light and are good for flowering.
While the lamps come with different shades or reflectors, sodium
bulbs in horizontal shades/reflectors, work best for flowering.
It is advisable to give 30 to 60 watts of light for each sq foot
of growing space. Be
aware that lights do get hot and can burn plants that get too near.
However, the closer the light is to the plants, the better for the
plant, as the light is stronger and more intense; thus highly beneficial
to the buds. In general keep 400w lights 30-45 cm above plants and
1000w lights 45 to 75 cm above plants.
Hybrid
- A hybrid is the offspring of two dissimilar genotypes bred to
each other.
Hydroponics
- Hydroponics is defined as a technique for growing plants without
soil in a nutrient and oxygen rich solution or medium. It is often
referred to as aquaculture or soil-less culture. Hydroponics was
usually reserved for commercial growers but home gardner's are increasingly
showing interest in the technique.

I
IBL
- An IBL is an inbred or stable seed-line that was bred or made
by a breeder, by crossing different genotypes (seed-lines) to each
other and then crossing successive generations of their offspring,
until uniformity of appearance and strength is achieved.
Indica
- Indica plants originate from northern latitudes. Indica's higher
CBD than THC equals a much heavier, sleepy type of high. Indica
plants have a very stony high that is relaxing and can help different
medical problems. Effective for anxiety, pain, nausea, appetite
stimulation, sleep, muscle spasms and tremors, among other symptoms.
The Sativa strains are MORE of a stimulant, effective in appetite
stimulation, relieving depression, migraines, pain and nausea.

Land
Race Strain
- A land race strain is one that has been grown for hundreds or
thousands of years in the country of origin.

M
Magnesium
- [M] Magnesium occurs in chlorophyll and is also an activator of
enzymes.
Male
Plant
- Marijuana plants display their sex, often around the period of
transition between growth and flowering. In the early stages, the
male flowers look like small bunches of mini green bananas or grapes.
These bunches are the pollen sacs. Once these sacs open, the tepals
push back and release their pollen. There is very little THC in
male flowers and their pollen has been known to make people ill.
Males are taller, so they can easily shower their pollen over the
females. They are less leafy and are often thin and stringy, unlike
their female counterparts. Males start flowering between 7 to 14
days when there is a change in the light cycle and need removing
because one or two males can produce enough pollen to seed a whole
crop of females, thus reducing the females' potency and ruining
your good work.
Metal
Halide Lamps
- Metal Halide lamps are used as an artificial light source for
growing plants indoors, having a "white" colour which
makes a good approximation for daylight. They are usually used during
a plant's growth phase because it's spectrum provides good growth
rate and smaller compact plants. Metal Halide Lamps provide high
system efficiency (up to 100 lumens/watt) compared to Mercury Vapor,
fluorescent and incandescent lights. They last for 10,000 to 15,000
hours, having a shorter lifetime than high pressure sodium lamps.
Mould
- About 75% of the weight of fresh cut cannabis is water and mould
can ruin a plant overnight during the drying process. To avoid mould
problems ensure there is good ventilation and air circulation. However,
if you do get a problem of mould, just separate the moldy plant
from the rest, trim off the mould and dry the plant quickly.

N
Nitrogen
- [N] Nitrogen is important for normal plant development. Nitrogen
is a component of amino acids, a protein which include nucleic acids,
enzymes, light-harvesting pigment and chlorophyll. Nitrogen promotes
plant growth and dense, bright foliage.

P
Perlite
- Perlite is a soil-less medium. Expanded perlite can weigh as little
as 2 pounds per cubic foot (32 kg/m3) making it suitable for numerous
applications such as horticultural and industrial. Perlite is a
form of natural glass and it is chemically inert with a pH of approximately
7.
pH
- [potential Hydrogen] pH is an index of Hydrogen's chemical activity
in a solution and expresses the degree of acidity of a substance
using a Log Scale Unit of Measure. pH scale goes from 0 to 14 with
seven being the neutral zone. Anything above is base or below is
acidic with 0 being the most acidic and 14 the most base. Pure water
is approximately a pH of 7 or neutral.
Phosphorus
- [P] Phosphorus commonly misspelled "Phosphorous" is
an essential part of the enzyme responsible for aiding crops to
fix light energy. Nucleic acids carries genetic information and
is important in stimulating root development. Phosphorus is an integral
part of nucleic acids.
Photoperiod
- The period of light in a plant's day. For indoor growing purposes
a photoperiod of 18 hours a day is recommended. To initiate flowering
the photoperiod is shortened to 12 hours of light a day.
Photosynthesis
- Photosynthesis is the building of compounds such as carbohydrates,
using light energy, water and CO2 (carbon dioxide), releasing oxygen
as a by-product. With no light at all, a plant's leaves soon yellow
and eventually the plant dies. With the right spectrum and intensity
of light, photosynthesis is accelerated and growth is rapid.
Pistils
- a carpel or group of fused carpels forming the female reproductive
part of a flower and including the ovary, style, and stigma.
Pot
- Slang term for marijuana.
Potassium
- [K] Potassium assist in the processes which ensure carbon assimilation
and the transport of photosynthates through the plant for storage
of sugars and proteins, and growth. Potassium is important for water
regulation and intake. Sufficient potassium help plants resist frost,
drought and certain diseases.

Rockwool
- Rockwool is spun glass wool made from volcanic rocks, hence the
name "Rockwool". Rockwool comes in various shapes and
sizes and is a popular grow media for hydroponics. Loved for its
convenience and versatility, this media is excellent at retaining
oxygen and water. Rockwool will also offer great structural support
for plants and is a solid choice for drip, ebb & flow and NFT
systems.
Rockwool usually has a high pH level which can cause an imbalance
in the nutrient solution. Pre-soaking the rockwool for a 24-hour
period before use will usually stabilize the grow media. Rockwool
is not biodegradable and is almost never reused.

S
Sativa
- Sativa plants originally come from the tropics. It has generally
higher THC (tetrahydrocannibinol) than CBD (cannabidiol), which
means it provides a more cerebral, soaring type of high; more energetic
thus stimulating brain activity and may produce hallucinations.
Flavours range from earthy to sweet and fruity.
Skunk
-
Spliff
- Slang term for a cigarette made of marijuana.
Sulphur
- [S] Sulphur forms part of two important amino acids which are
part of the many building blocks of protein. Sulphur is found in
B1 vitamin and several other enzymes.

V
Vermiculite
- Vermiculite is a soil-less medium, which does not provide nutrients
to plants. Soil-less media are almost neutral in pH level and will
not interfere with nutrient solution. Used alone or as a combination,
these Soil-less media are great for crops because vermiculite retains
moisture while perlite provides adequate oxygenation and will not
disturb a delicate root system.
